A half day in Alfama, from the studio door
Guests arrive early or finish with an hour to spare. This is what we tell them, in walking order.

The studio sits on Rua Leite de Vasconcelos, halfway up the Alfama hill. Almost everything below is within a fifteen-minute walk of the front door.
The viewpoints
Miradouro das Portas do Sol and Miradouro de Santa Luzia sit side by side above the river and are the two postcard views of the neighbourhood: tiled terraces, the rooftops falling away, the Tejo behind. Both are a short walk uphill and both are busiest in the middle of the day.
For portraits, go early. The light off the pale walls before nine is soft and the terraces are empty; by noon you are shooting around tour groups.
The castle and the old streets
Castelo de São Jorge crowns the hill above Alfama, and the climb to it runs through the lanes that survived the 1755 earthquake. The walk matters more than the monument for anyone with a camera: staircases, laundry lines, azulejos and doorways in every direction.
Note that most of the district is stairs and cobbles. Bring shoes that agree with that, and do not plan to roll a case of gear up the hill.
Getting here and away
Santa Apolónia is the nearest metro and mainline station, at the bottom of the hill by the river, and the airport is a short ride on the same metro line with one change. The 28 tram crosses the neighbourhood and is charming, slow and full — treat it as sightseeing, not transport to a call time.
Taxis and rideshares can reach the streets around the studio but not every lane; we send a pin with the exact drop-off when you book.
The river side
Downhill, the riverfront runs from Campo das Cebolas towards Santa Apolónia and the cruise terminal, with open water, wide light and space to move — useful when a shoot needs an exterior that is not a narrow street.
Continue west and you reach Praça do Comércio and the Baixa grid in about twenty minutes on foot.
Shooting in the neighbourhood
Interiors here are quiet because through traffic cannot reach most of the district, which is exactly why the studio works. Outside, the ambient soundscape is footsteps, seagulls, the occasional tram and, in June, the Santos Populares — a fortnight when Alfama becomes the venue and recording outdoors is not realistic.
Filming in the public street with a tripod and crew can require a permit from the city; a handheld camera and two people generally does not. Ask us if the shoot is bigger than that.
